The fruit

Rang 4 Early is a sweet, mild and crisp apple. It is ready to harvest and eat in late July here in Sainte-Julienne (zone 4). It must be harvested before the apple is ripe, or its flesh will become soft and floury. As the photo illustrates, its seeds have to be white at the time of harvest, a sign of immature fruit. Its skin is pale green with a pink blush. It is the first apple ready for harvest in the season. The secret of its good taste is to pick it at the right time. Picked too early it's hard and sour. Conversely, picked too late it's soft and floury. Rang 4 Early is not a good keeper. In 2014, one of our American volunteer workers, who was used to buying apples from a grocery store, commented that this was the best apple she had ever eaten!

The apple tree

We are unaware of any diseases affecting the Rang 4 Early apple tree. It is an easy maintenance apple tree that requires little attention. We graft it on standard full size rootstock. Rang 4 Early is fully hardy to zone 4. Although untested, it might be hardy to zone 3 or colder.

Its origin

The original Rang 4 Early apple tree was an abandoned variety we discovered in our region. We were impressed by its earliness, as we knew of no other apple ready to eat in July before finding this tree.
