Tecumseh Plum Tree - Zone 3
This hardy Japanese/American hybrid produces delicious fruit year after year.
The plum’s exterior is bright red with a bluish bloom and the flesh is yellow and firm. It is a juicy plum with not too much acidity in the flavour, good for eating fresh and making jams.
Tecumseh is medium sized tree fully hardy to zone 3 and grows relatively quickly. It can be expected to begin bearing fruit after about 6 years. Fruit are ready for harvest in mid-August and yields are yearly and consistently plentiful. It produces beautiful clusters of white flowers in spring before the appearance of leaves. The tree is self-sterile and requires a Canada Plum growing in the vicinity to reach its fruit bearing potential.
This variety was introduced in 1923 by N.E. Hansen of the South Dakota Experimental Station in Brookings, South Dakota. It is a cross between Japanese variety “Shiro” and the American “Surprise”.
